New challenges for grid connected solar inverters
With the solar power system apply more and more widely, the grid connected inverter market has also played its role as a key component of solar energy installation. In order to realize the stable and reliable operation of the grid, the grid connected inverter market must ensure the quality of the transported power and the stability of the whole grid. To keep pace with these requirements, grid operators will publish new grid operating rules that each manufacturer must follow to oversee increasing usage. Technically, so far, common inverter designs use the following parameters as standard: the temperature range is between -25 ~ 50℃; the estimated period of use will be about 20 years; conversion rate is usually over 94%; with electromagnetic compatibility; lower cost; higher reliability; all power grid faults can be carried; the power factor approaches 1 while maximum power point tracking (MPPT) can be performed simultaneously.
At present, the function of most inverters is to convert the DC voltage produced by the solar device into sinusoidal AC current waveform at the switching converter to ensure the connection and synchronization between the generator and the power grid. However, this function subsequently changed. The new standards put forward different requirements for solar panel power inverter in various degrees: the development of key characteristics such as efficiency, cost and stability; compatibility with SiC, Gan and other new materials; integration with micro inverter and other innovative technologies; effective maximum power point tracking control function; and follow various new specifications, such as “anti island effect” testing.
In terms of requirements for new materials such as silicon based MOSFET, SiC technology has undergone significant changes in the field of carbide, making the production capacity of MOSFET far beyond the IGBT, especially in high pressure and high temperature conditions. This provides a feasible way to improve the efficiency of solar powered inverter.
